Last year, a man by the name of Pee5 had a vision that he wanted to bring to life – to unite underground LA artists, and showcase their talents to form a collaborative mixtape. His purpose was to highlight the authentic sound of the city, while allowing each vocalist to show their skills and build with each other.
The first The City Mixtape included features from Kalan.FrFr, DaiDMB, DG Santana, 1TakeJay, DMB Gotti, and many more. MCF’s Westside $tew, WeezGB, and Wilcox The General stirred up more excitement, with their music video for “No Leash.” All in all, the tape accurately portrayed the vibe of a summer in Los Angeles, featuring all that the city had to offer in one convenient project.
Fast forward to summer 2019, and we are presented with The City Mixtape Vol. 2. At 26 tracks, the exhaustive compilation features many of the same artists who made the original a success, as well as several new faces who slot in nicely. We sat down with executive producer Pee5, to learn more about the tape and what inspired it.
Since you were raised in the Crenshaw District, did Nipsey play a role behind the motive of the tape?
“Most definitely, it’s a mixtape where we can bring each other together. The purpose is to utilize the resources within our city, and take our talents to the top. We are the most influential city, most influential culture. This unity is important especially since the passing of Nip, to show how we can come together and make something great happen. I’m following his blueprint, I’m definitely inspired by Nipsey.”
What producers did you have work on it?
“Laudiano, Bankroll Dani, Hotboy West, and Paupa.”
Was there a theme to this project?
“Honestly, I just wanted to make this tape more ratchet than the first one. Real summer, party type music.”
Who are some familiar faces that are on TCM2?
“Casey Veggies, WeezGb, Dai DMB, LilCadi, PettyPetty, TrapDes, DonnyLoc, 1TakeQuan, Woodro, Westside $tew, Hitta G, DMB Gotti, and more.”
