G Perico just got his deal. In a new interview with Complex, the South Central storyteller breaks down his new partnership with Roc Nation, and how their commonalities made him feel it was the perfect home for him.
“[Roc Nation] was created out of adversity,” he said. “I’m coming from a similar situation. I’m an underdog. The founding members of Roc-A-Fella and Roc Nation are underdogs that made a splash in the game. They’re going to understand where I’m coming from and my woes.”
G Perico also touched on the stigma around therapy in his community, and how he wants to inspire the next generation. “Around here, if you’re smart, motherfuckers will steal your confidence in your intelligence,” he said. “We all ignorant to certain things, but it’s frowned upon to have your own mind. That’s a battle within itself. I’m here to inspire that.”
G Perico’s new project Ten-Eight is out now, with features from AzChike, Bucho and Sonny Digital. Two of LA’s biggest radio shows, LA Leakers and Homegrown Radio, both appear on interludes, tying the tape to the city while adding new layers of familiarity as well. He’s calling Ten-Eight an “appetizer” to his forthcoming album Broadway, which will be executively produced by the acclaimed producer and instrumentalist, Terrace Martin.
