Behind the Boards: Ron-Ron

“Ron-Ron Do That Shit!”

You cannot think of the new LA rap scene without the man who made the blueprint for much of it — Ron-Ron the producer. The 21 year old producer grew up on 85th and Wall in the heart of Watts, CA, attending Washington Prep during his high school days. Back then, he was just a kid riding his skateboard through the neighborhood; fast-forward to today, and he’s touring with close collaborators such as Shoreline Mafia.

His success has allowed him to headline his own shows as well; entitled – “Ron-Ron and Friends” which have featured artists such as Shoreline Mafia, 03 Greedo, 1TakeJay, and many more. His mixtape of the same name shares his work with the pillars from the LA’s rising scene, including tracks such as “Chunky Monkey” (Ralfy The Plug, Drakeo The Ruler, and Kellz);  “Out the Slums” (Drakeo The Ruler and 03 Greedo); and “Nun Major” (OhGeesy).

This week, as I sat down with Ron-Ron before we filmed an episode on my hip-hop game show FRIED, I was able to learn a little more about the man who plays a huge role for this new LA sound wave.

What were you doing before music?

“I was a skateboarder. I was into skating and riding dirt bikes and shit like that until I realized that maybe that wasn’t the life for me.”

How’d you get started doing music?

“I started making beats at 14. My cousin who was rapping introduced me to a program in which I then brought it over to my other cousin, Ace the Face, who was already producing. From that point, he worked with me and showed me the basics. I kept going on from there. I started off making jerkin beats since the movement was blowing up at the moment.”

Which program did you start off with?

“FL Studios. And I still use it to this day. I love that program. I actually got it tatted on me last week.”

Who do you want to work with?

“I want to be more active with working with artists from Atlanta. Just trying to get my name out there. I’m really trying to work with Gunna, Major Lazer. I’ll do something with Justin Bieber if I have to.”

Do you prefer being in the studio, or having your own space while working?

“I like being in the studio. When it’s my studio session, I guess I do prefer it to be a little crowded, as long as its all my homies in there. But, I do  like my own space. When I first started to make beats it was just me, alone in my room. So it’s safe to say I do like my own space to focus.. So I like both –  just depends.”

What is your personal favorite track you’ve done?

Definitely “Whuss the Deal,” by Shoreline Mafia.
